The Fight or Flight Response and
Disease:
[This
article was originally sent to a hypnotherapy discussion group,
so some of the terms might not be familiar to you, but I think
the underlying theme is the important part and I'll make some
remarks in brackets to help]
I want to say up front that I recognize that we need to avoid
creating a waking suggestion for illness/disease, but I think
the basic premise of this topic is too important, for both our and
our clients understanding to not explore this concept with
them... [Humans sometimes enter a
state where suggestions have a much deeper impact on us (the
doctors office is a good example) and hypnotherapists are
careful not to use words at those times that could have a
negative impact on them]
I was working with a client who had a very obstinate Anger
part. Nothing new here, right? :) This part was huge and in no
mood to have its job reduced in any way. It had saved her
life many times and thought the other parts were wimpy and
worthless. This part got this big due to the client’s life
of massive abuse by her family, but is now a 40 something adult,
living many states away from that toxic environment.
[We all have aspects, or parts of our
personalities and in hypnosis we can actually talk to those
parts and negotiate conflict resolution. It's also
important to note that we often have very negative, very active,
subconscious aspects that are not externally evident. In
other words, an apparently happy person can have something like
Rage boiling beneath the surface]
As an aside here, I'd like to mention that I've found I can do
parts work remotely as if I had the client in my chair. If
I have someone in UH and I ask for another client's soul's
permission to do this work, his or her parts are available and
know all our previous conversations that occurred when working
directly with that client's parts.
So, I had this Anger part who would not consider another
job, reduction in influence, or anything else. I told this part
that while they had saved her life in the past, they were now
killing her! As it protested I went on to explain how the human
body was originally constructed.
Human beings were designed to only experience the fight, or
flight response for a brief part of their lives. It is fear,
rage, anxiety, apprehension, anger, etc., that triggers that
response. During that response all the human's resources are
diverted to momentary survival, rather than long term well
being. The arteries of the internal organs are constricted and
blood, oxygen, ATP, etc., is diverted to the hindbrain
(primitive brain) where reflex and action are instantaneous.
This requires little, or no participation from the forebrain
(thinking mind) and also diverts those resources to the muscles
of the extremities.
I explained that even in prehistoric times, with monstrous
animals trying to kill humans, that being spent most of its time
in a cave with a small opening, or in some other safe place.
There they did chores, played with their kids and lived in peace
most of the time. In this state their body's organs, glands and
immune system's were fortified and nurtured. Health and healing
prevail in this environment.
I went on to explain to Anger that if they kept her body in the
fight, or flight state all the time, the kind of dis-ease she
was experiencing was unavoidable. I explained things like the
fact that 3/5 of our blood volume normally goes to digestion, in
response to a meal, so how can that happen if those types of
systems are running as the lowest priority? I asked Anger that
if they agreed that their goal was for [client] to live a long,
successful life, how is that possible if you have them in fight,
or flight 24/7? I explained that I was not suggesting that they
cease to exist... Their job is still very important, but only
during a small portion of this person's life. I didn't ask for
an immoderate decision on how to proceed. I asked Anger to just
contemplate what we had covered and tour the client’s body, to
see if what I was saying was true.
When I checked back in a couple of days, Anger was a welcomed
partner in her very harmonious parts team!
A great resource for this information is something that's been
discussed here before: Biology of Belief, by Dr. Bruce Lipton,
is available in book, or audiobook form and so is, The Wisdom of
Your Cells by the same author...
