If we are in this earthly existence to face & overcome our fears & life challenges/purposes, so how is this an illusion if we will take our progress with our soul after we pass on?

The illusion you speak of is the dance you are doing in human body.  When you are in body and have forgotten who you really are and an illusion is created, somewhat of a dream, but it is your current reality in that particular human expression.  What you do with that lifetime is the accomplishments that add to your total in the form of spirit, or soul accumulation of experiences.  You are on your journey and making progress with each and every incarnation.  This you take with you and redesign the next and the next incarnations.  This is only if you are so inclined to do so and by no means mandatory.
